Merry Christmas All!
Living outside of the USA for much of my life has given me an appreciation for cultural differences in celebrating Christmas. The gift and money, spend, spend parts do not interest me much. I more enjoy looking at and participating in celebrations in different cultures. Here are a few fun facts about celebrating Christmas in different countries. They are not as sanitized as you find in the USA and many other countries.
Please share your local customs for Christmas celebrations here. I would love to know more!
We celebrate 12 days of Christmas in Spain, from December 24 (Noche Buena) until 6 January, (el Dia de los Reyes).
This year it was funny because the kids are more into Santa Claus because they have figured out that if they embrace Santa they get more gifts! All of this is a big departure from the past and is changing the face of Christmas in Spain.
Christmas is different in different parts of the world. For example where I live in Barcelona, Catalunya, Espanya, we celebrate with Caga Tío rather than Santa Claus. The kids beat the "shitting log" (caga tío) until it poops out gifts. No shit! Here is a song below and a wiki link to learn more.
here is a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ti%C3%B3_de_Nadal
Catalan version 01
avellanes i mató,
si no cagues bé
et daré un cop de bastó.
English version o1
shit nougats (turrón),
hazelnuts and mató cheese,
if you don't shit well,
I'll hit you with a stick,
An alternate version goes something like this:
Catalan version 02
tió de Nadal,
no caguis arengades,
que són massa salades
que són més bons!"
English version 02
log of Christmas,
don't shit herrings,
which are too salty,
shit nougats (turrón)
which are much better!
Also, el Caganer (the shitter) is a fixture in all nativity scenes. They also make Caganer´s of all the famous politicians, futbol players and others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caganer
We were in the Netherlands a few weeks ago and saw Sinterklaas and Black Pete. Black Pete was a freed slave that hangs out with Sinterklaas. Black Pete is very cool and funny. They are trying to rewrite his history and deny his time as a slave. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas
The traditional Christmas dinner in Poland is carp and herring, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_dinner. The link shows traditional foods for many countries. In Spain we traditionally eat lobster and shellfish.
Christmas eve was fun and rewarding. Caga Tío pooped out some great nugs! Christmas day I am spending with my wonderful loving wife and our puppy dog. We will eat, drink, puff, hang out and have a quiet day.
The best to you all for the holidays!
