New research says the theory that Marijuana serves as a gateway to “harder drug use” has been overblown.
(Really… what’s next: a round Earth)?

“Half-baked” is precisely how the Health Blog at CBS translates the message released from a study analyzed by researchers at the University of New Hampshire.
“There seems to be this idea that we can prevent later drug problems by making sure kids never smoke pot,” lead researcher Dr. Karen Van Gundy, associate professor of sociology at the university, told CBS News. “But whether marijuana smokers go on to use other illicit drugs depends more on social factors like being exposed to stress and being unemployed – not so much whether they smoked a joint in the eighth grade.”

A transpartisan coalition of prosecutors, judges, cops, students, bloggers and political operatives on both sides of the aisle launched a campaign Tuesday to bring an end to marijuana prohibition, focusing on ballot initiatives in 2010 and 2012. The campaign, “Just Say Now,” gets its name from Nancy Reagan’s iconic anti-drug slogan from the 1980s that has become synonymous with the government’s black-and-white approach to drug policy.

Before we get to the article I wanted to say that immigration, actually illegal immigration, has always been a heated topic here in the United States. Some people argue it hurts their local economy, others contend it fills menial jobs most Americans aren’t willing to do. So what happens when the immigrants are part of a Mexican drug cartel growing hundreds of pounds of cannabis? Well, upon first glance of reading the headline, “Police seize $1.7bn worth of marijuana in California,” any casual toker would think, “bummer dude”. However, there are a lot of responsible people here in California trying to give medical MJ a good name, and when Mom and Pop voter read a story like that, they’re not going to want to vote YES on Proposition 19 that legalizes recreational cannabis in California. So what do you think? Are Mexican cartels hurting California’s chance of legalizing marijuana in November?

FRESNO, Calif. — Proposition 19, a November ballot initiative, would legalize recreational marijuana use for California residents over 21 and allow small residential cultivation – but also would put the state in conflict with federal law that says the drug is illegal.
“The (Obama) administration opposes legalization of any drugs, including marijuana,” Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, said in an interview Thursday.

Medical marijuana is now legal in Washington, DC, nearly 12 years after District residents voted overwhelmingly to approve it. The DC Council in May approved legislation allowing the city to permit up to eight dispensaries, but under Home Rule laws, Congress had 30 working days in which it could overrule the District. It declined to do so.

Marijuana Inc., hosted by Al Roker, touches on the story about the rise and fall Charles C. Lynch, former dispensary owner from Morro Bay, California(amazing beach town btw) who was arrested by the federal government. Similar to Ed Rosenthal’s case but with a different outcome! Checkout the series posted over at 420magazine, and read through the forum for more info on Lynch’s case.

This is a very interesting read about how economic forces are driving the birth of a new industry called “Big Pot”. This one former construction firm owner plans to, “…use two football fields of space to grow about 58 pounds of marijuana every day…” WTF That is incredible!!! You just have to read this L.A. Times article…
“The state’s pot-friendliest city could approve a plan to set up four marijuana factory farms. But it has ignited intense opposition from medical marijuana activists, dispensary operators and growers.”

This is a pretty interesting video about one man’s business of providing medicinal herb to patients who are unable to physically obtain it themselves. California is always kicking ass when it comes to great medical marijuana stories.
